Welcome, New Families

On Thursday evening, August 21, 2008 Deena and Scott Krevans graciously hosted a lovely Dessert Reception at the Les Jardins Clubhouse for the newest members of the DKJA family. More than 70 parents joined Head of School Karen Feller, Annual Fund Co-Chair Dr. Stephen Grabelsky, and school administrators at this festive event. Many, many thanks to our PTO President Deena Krevans and her husband Scott, for hosting this warm welcome for our new DKJA parents.

Lower School Highlights

As a special lesson in current events, DKJA Parent Gina Cayne recently addressed lower school students, dressed in the jogging suit she wore as one of the privileged few selected to run with the Olympic torch in 2002. That year, the winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mrs. Cayne ran with the torch in New York, alongside noted personalities such as then-New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre, and the B-52s musical group. Mrs. Cayne was selected to to participate to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Meet the Masters Begins Exciting Year
On August 27, 2008, the Meet the Masters program’s orientation meeting was held, marking the program’s 15th year of at DKJA.

This year’s Parent Chairs are Jill Wrubel, Alicia Jultak, and Rachel Clouse. Dr. Suzie Khalil and Josie Fixler will chair “Art Walk,” an exciting art show featuring the masterpieces of K-12 students that will be held this spring.Dara Salama will continue as our schools Pine Grove Elementary partner school coordinator.

Our theme this year is “Art is Elemental.” The elements of art will be focused upon as the masters are studied: Leonardo Da Vinci (line),  Henri Matisse (shape), Faith Ringgold (color), Auguste Rodin (form), and Ansel Adams (value). We welcome new parent/grandparent involvement, and if you have any interest or questions, please call Mrs. Routman X5040.

Middle School Highlights

Fifth Grade Students Start the School Year Eager to Embark on Middle School Challenges

We are proud to report that DKJA’s well-prepared fifth-graders  enjoyed their summer breaks and arrived back at school with their summer work packets completed. Written work on the Egypt Game was handed in, and students arrived on the first day of school with smiles and eager attitudes. New schedules were handed out by homeroom teachers, and everyone knew where to go by day two. We personally want to welcome new students Michelle Blinder, Arielle Thornton, and Nola Schwalb to our family at Donna Klein Jewish Academy. Mrs. Lauren Ostrow has joined our team this year and we are excited to have her teaching our students both history and English. As always, “5th grade rocks,” and we are looking forward to a marvelous year filled with new, exciting, and interesting learning experiences. So get ready, because we have already begun our countdown and we are ready to explore new frontiers.

Seventh Graders Enjoy Kabbalat Shabbat

Seventh-graders, led by Mrs. Dahoah, enthusiastically participated in Kabbalat Shabbat services.

Eighth-grade Goes Outward Bound

On Friday, August 29, eighth-graders went to South County Regional Park for a day of physically and mentally challenging activities for the Outward Bound program. The emphasis of the program is teambuilding, trust, problem solving, and self-assessment. Coach Feierstein did an amazing job of organizing activities that enabled the students to learn important life skills.

High School Judaic Studies News

The Jewish month of Elul, with the sounding of the shofar daily, encourages and reminds us to take a good look at our lives and find ways to raise the bar. Our Jewish mission at DKJA is to find ways to support our students as they learn and grow.  Walking through the high school halls and sitting in on classes, it is evident that our students are being challenged to experience depth of Jewish knowledge and create strong connections to their heritage. As I watch the students interacting respectfully with their teachers and peers, I feel confident that kavod/honor permeates our building in a real and meaningful way.  What a wonderful way to begin the school year!

At our first retreat Shabbaton of the year, high school students enjoyed a lovely Shabbat together. The spirit was evident as the school was divided into color war groups of heroes and villains, in red and blue.  Our Student Council President, Darit Zweibel, together with help from the other captains, worked many hours (including during the summer) to help prepare for the schools’ biggest Shabbaton ever. A special yasher koach (thanks) for all their hard work!
